2024 WV Day Open House at Glenwood
Attendance might have been a bit lower than usual due to extreme temperatures & a heat advisory, but the guests who toured Glenwood on June 20, 2024 thoroughly enjoyed their visits. Fewer visitors meant that our volunteers could spend more time with each guest, better acquainting them with Glenwood’s treasures while also enjoying music by Marjie Foster at the antique grand piano.
Among the newest items on display are additional items woven by Miss Lucy Quarrier. When Miss Lucy passed away in 1983, she left behind several unfinished pieces. Thanks to the talents of Barbara Smith of the Lucy Quarrier Weavers, many of these works of art were completed & are now ready for display. Miss Lucy’s & Barbara’s lovely placemats were displayed on the dining room & kitchen tables, much to the admiration of Glenwood volunteers & guests.
In addition, Barbara’s offer to perform the finishing touches on many pieces inspired the notion to use some of Miss Lucy’s woven upholstery fabric to recover two dining room-style chairs found in the attic. The chairs were in quite poor condition but Larry Tucker was able to bring them back to life, utilizing his specialized knowledge & Miss Lucy’s fabric. A section of this beautiful material includes a placard noting that it had been exhibited in 1958. These chairs are now shown to their best advantage in the downstairs bedroom.
Open houses would not be possible without our volunteers! Sincere gratitude is extended to: Dwayne Bartley, AmeriCorps member; Ashley Clark, Mike & Dot Gioulis, Cookie Glasser, James Griffith, Megan Sharp, Carol Susman & Bella Winfree.
Also, many thanks to Darrell Cadle & Larry Tucker for the many lovely touches around the house!
