Welcome to Glenwood
Explore the story of this 19th-century West Virginia Treasure
Background
The Glenwood Estate in Charleston, West Virginia is the former home of the Laidley, Summers & Quarrier families.
Renowned for its Greek Revival architecture, the home was built in the mid-19th century for James Madison Laidley, a
prominent lawyer and businessman.
After financial difficulties in 1857, Laidley sold the property to
George Summers & his wife, Amacetta Laidley Summers. Their
son Lewis Summers inherited Glenwood upon his father’s
death in 1868.
The estate passed through Lewis Summers’ children until it
ultimately became the property of Lewis & Lucy W. Summers’
granddaughter, Lucy Quarrier, who preserved Glenwood by
donating it to what is now the Historic Glenwood Foundation, Inc.
Today, the estate stands as a well-maintained historic site reflecting the region’s rich heritage.
