Judge George & Amacetta L. Summers

Judge George Summers (1804–1868) was a prominent Virginia lawyer and public
servant known for his oratory skills and leadership during the secession crisis. Born in
Fairfax County and later settling in Kanawha County, Summers built a distinguished
legal career and served as a delegate at critical conventions addressing Virginia’s
political future. He strongly supported the Union, voting against secession and ultimately
retiring from public life after Virginia chose to leave the Union.

In 1833, George W. Summers married Miss Amacetta Laidley (1818–1867). Amacetta was the eldest daughter of John O. and Mary S. Laidley, respected residents of Cabell County.

Known for her religious devotion, Amacetta was also deeply committed to her roles as both wife and mother. She and her husband welcomed several children into their family. However, only one son, Lewis Summers, survived to adulthood.

Amacetta's life was marked by her steadfast faith and dedication to her family. She passed away in October 1867, just before the birth of her first grandchild, who arrived early in 1868.
